LASER POWER
When I was a
young boy growing up in Winnipeg someone once gave me a magnifying
glass. I remember being absolutely enthralled with it because of how it
made everything look so much BIGGER!
Ants, crickets and grasshoppers became prehistoric monsters and
earthworms became Anacondas. Whoa, how did that happen? Pull the glass
away and they shrink down to regular size, put it back over them and
they magically grow again. Incredible!
This held my attention for hours on end before one day I stumbled upon
something that really blew my mind. It was a warm, sunny autumn
afternoon and I was crouched down looking through my magnifying glass
at a brilliantly colored Oak leaf that had just floated down in front
of me. The sun was shining over my shoulder through the glass onto the
leaf making it really bright and big and I could see all the veins so
clearly. Then I touched the leaf and it was obvious that it felt
unusually warm.
That caught my attention. So with boyish curiosity I repeated the
process with another leaf and pretty soon it was warmer too.
Interesting.
Eventually I noticed that by pulling the glass back just a little the
sunlight became a circle, and as I pulled back more the circle became
increasingly smaller. Pretty soon there was just a pinpoint of light
that I watched with fascination until all of a sudden, HOLY, the leaf
started smoking. Was I impressed or what!
Needless to say, within a short time there were many Oak leaves lying
about with holes and interesting patterns burned right through them.
What a fantastic day that was!
Okay, okay, this has been a pleasant journey down memory lane for me
but by now you may be asking, "So what's your point?"
Well, my point is that this boyhood experience was actually a lesson in
life success and achievement principles that I didn't understand at the
time but would be exposed to over and over again during the ensuing
years while playing organized sports, lowering my golf handicap,
realizing success in my sales career, and building my business.
This point I'm referring to is that energy diffused can create
some warmth, but generating enough heat to create real change requires
focus.
In practical terms what this means is that if you want something,
whether it be more success in your career or business, increased
fitness, more money, a higher quality relationship, a nicer home, car
or boat, or even better health, you must become focused upon it.
Why?
Because your thoughts, particularly in regards to their creative power
and motivational ability, are much like those rays of sunshine I was
playing with as a child. Wishing for something or thinking how 'nice it
would be to have it' is a pleasant way to spend time but it seldom
generates much in the way of results. It's like positioning the
magnifying glass in such a way that it casts diffused sunlight upon the
leaf ... it's entertaining and may generate a little warmth but that's
about it. To make something significant happen, to get your leaf
"smoking", you need to concentrate your thought power.
How? One way is to follow this simple 6 Step process.
Step 1: Become crystal clear on what you want; something surprisingly
few people ever do. Be specific.
Step 2: Become clear on the 'Why' behind your wants; something even
fewer people do. To do this, give serious thought to, and answer with
self-honesty, the following questions in order:
· Why do I want it?
· What will it mean to me?
· How will it make me feel?
Allow yourself time with this step and write out your answers. Be aware
that this may not be as easy as it appears because it causes you to go
increasingly deeper into yourself, taking you right into the 'heart' of
the matter.
Step 3: Once you're clear on what you want and the 'Why' behind it,
write out what you want in present tense form as though you already
have it. Use descriptive words that stir up emotion.
Step 4: Using your imagination, create a mental movie of you
experiencing what it is you want. Allow yourself to not only see, but
also hear, smell, taste and feel it.
Step 5: Read your written description and re-view your movie at least a
couple of times each day, preferably first thing in the morning and
last thing before you drift off to sleep. Let yourself 'experience' it
again and again.
Step 6: As you walk through each day look for opportunities to take
action consistent with achieving your desired objective. Then watch for
signs, probably subtle ones initially, that what you want is coming.
Completing this little 6 Step exercise can be a powerful
experience. There's no question that repeating steps 5 and 6 on a daily
basis requires commitment and discipline, but do this religiously for a
minimum of 30 consecutive days and see what happens ... your life will
never be the same!
To your success,
