DOING IT DELIBERATELY

During the past several years since selling my previous business interests and founding Growing Into Success Training I've been working with individuals from many walks of life, as well as businesses and organizations from a wide variety of industries. For me it's always been about helping my clients achieve new and higher levels of success both personally and professionally and there are many heartwarming success stories.

In my first year however, as I was in the early stages of marketing my services, I noticed an interesting phenomenon that surprised me. As I observed the developing pattern I was shocked and even frustrated before finally shaking it off and getting over it. I've understood for years that each of us chooses our own path and is responsible for the consequences of our actions but what I was seeing still caught me off guard and I found it disturbing.

So what is this phenomenon? The phenomenon is that those that could benefit most from new information and ideas are often the least interested, while those already doing well tend to be open to any knowledge that will make them even better.

It is baffling though why businesses struggling in key areas (whether or not they are currently enjoying some degree of success) are the least likely to reach out for help, while those with already high standards readily invest time, energy and money in progressive training and systems.

The same is true for individuals. Often times those experiencing serious personal or relationship challenges have had warning flags flapping stiffly in the breeze for months and even years, yet have made little or no effort to do any personal evaluation or seek outside guidance that might lead to corrective action. On the other hand, those with a healthy sense of 'self' and already enjoying successful relationships are often the most avid students of life success knowledge.

So why is that? I'm not exactly sure but I strongly suspect that with the latter group it's the drive for ongoing improvement that helped them create their success to begin with.

I do know though that life is constantly presenting each of us with situations and circumstances that are actually opportunities to learn and grow, to realize more of our potential. What we do with these opportunities however is up to us.

We can embrace and explore them for our benefit, or reject and hide from them to our detriment. The choice is always ours. Unfortunately, when we choose the latter we not only experience painful consequences but also find these 'opportunities' showing up again and again as thinly disguised variations with intensified consequences each time they're ignored.

In the business world this scene may play out in the form of ever greater challenges pertaining to staffing, product or service quality, customer relations and retention, or the ability to secure necessary financing … any of which can result in financial hardship and perhaps even failure of the business itself.

In the personal world it may play out in the form of lower self-image, loss of confidence, rocky or terminated relationships, or lack of direction and purpose.

In the end we may finally learn the required lesson through this uncomfortable experience but it's not necessary to go down such a difficult path. We don't need to wait for a crisis to send a wakeup call that we can't ignore … we can CHOOSE differently at any time.

I also know from personal experience that small improvements in our thoughts, attitudes and behaviours can create significant gains that compound over time. Seeking out new knowledge and perspectives and making the effort to develop new skills leads to a more capable me with increased self-esteem, self-respect and confidence, and opens the door to new worlds of possibilities.

During the course of my life I've been down both paths, first the one of 'painful lessons' and later the other of 'conscious development', and without question I prefer intentional personal growth to the alternative of having it forced upon me in some unpleasant way.

How about you, what are you choosing? Are you a deliberate and conscious student of life or are you waiting for the next crisis to drive the lesson home? Ultimately it's your choice, it always is.

To your success,
Reg Neufeld
