"Every great leap forward in your life comes after you have made a clear decision of some kind." ----- Brian Tracy

IT ALL BEGINS WITH A DECISION

Ahh, decisions. Say, do you have time for a short story? It's really short, especially by my standards.

Once upon a time there was a young man who was 'struggling' with his life.

On the one hand he had a lot of things going for him. He was healthy, reasonably bright, and had a head full of dreams. He was also married to a beautiful young woman and they had the cutest little son.

On the other hand, he had some challenges. He had more debt than money, very little education, and although he did have a job, his long-term career prospects seemed very limited. He also had a knack for making questionable decisions and then not taking responsibility for the outcomes. In his own little fiefdom he was the king of blame; nothing was ever his fault. Oh, and he didn't respect himself very much either.

He was becoming increasingly frustrated. He knew there was a world of opportunity out there but it seemed none of those opportunities were his. Although he'd been waiting for what seemed like a very long time, nobody was knocking his door down desperate to offer him a first class ticket to the life he wanted and felt entitled to.

Life was so unfair. Why didn't SOMEONE see his potential … why was it that other people were so lucky?

Then one day, when money was again particularly tight and yet another thing had gone wrong that wasn't his fault, he had an epiphany. It struck him that if he didn't change his perception of how life worked, and his role in it, and if he didn't begin taking responsibility for his actions and their consequences, then nothing in his life was ever going to change, at least not for the better.

It finally dawned on him that no white knight in shining armor was about to come galloping in to save him any time soon, nor did it seem likely that a fairy godmother would suddenly appear, wave her magic wand, and make everything perfect in his world.

What a revelation! It hit me like a ton of bricks.

Yes, that was me.

And it WAS a revelation, a revelation that had a profound affect on my life, and it led me to do a couple of things I'd never done before. First, I took honest stock of who and what I was. Second, I decided who and what I wanted to become.

That decision led to other decisions, such as the decision to take personal responsibility for my attitude, words, actions and results. It also led to a decision to become a student again, although not in the traditional sense.

I started reading books about how to take control of my attitude, how to better understand and more effectively deal with people, and how to set and achieve goals. I created an imaginary mentor who had all of the qualities and traits I most admired, and none of the ones I didn't, and I decided to become just like that person.

Now don't misunderstand. My life didn't magically change overnight. Although I did set off on this new direction I certainly took many a wrong turn along the way. What made it possible for me to continue on though was clearly knowing where I eventually wanted to end up. With that big picture destination in mind I was always able to find my way back to the path that would eventually take me there.

During the ensuing months and years I made measurable progress and won many personal battles, each victory adding to my self-respect and self-confidence, and within a reasonable time new and better opportunities did come knocking on my door, resulting in significant professional and financial breakthroughs. It was quite amazing; by making changes on the inside my outside world was changing.

What I learned from that experience is that there is a simple process anyone can follow to become unstuck from literally any situation and to regain control of ones life direction. Are you interested? It goes like this:

1. Objectively EVALUATE your present situation (I recommend doing this in all areas of life at least annually). Identify what you like and what you don't like about it.
2. Accept complete RESPONSIBILITY for the situation as it exists (after all, you either created it or allowed it to develop).
3. Become as CLEAR as possible on what you actually want, on how you would rather have that situation be (keeping what you do like, eliminating what you don't, and adding whatever would make it just right). Visualize that in your imagination and re-view that movie regularly.
4. Make a DECISION to do whatever might be necessary to change it from the way it is to the way you want it to be. Commit to it.
5. Take ACTION that will lead to the changes you desire.
6. Stay with it! PERSEVERE until you succeed.

Each of the above components is important to this process but what I've certainly learned is that success rarely occurs without a firm decision and commitment.

Interestingly, several times over the next twenty odd years I found myself again stuck in some way, either personally or professionally, and each time nothing changed until I made a clear and firm decision to take responsibility and create that change.

Have you ever experienced anything like that? Are you experiencing such a thing now? Would you like it to change it? Will you change it? When?

To your success,
Reg Neufeld
