GIVE YOURSELF EVERY CHANCE
There are probably few things in life more satisfying and rewarding than deliberately setting out to create positive change in some area of your life, and then successfully doing so.
Whether it's advancing your career or financial situation, losing weight, launching a new business, becoming healthier, developing a new skill, or improving a relationship; the feelings associated with such accomplishments typically make all of the time and effort spent more than worthwhile.
Have you experienced that? I'm sure you have.
Unfortunately, if you're like many of us you've probably also at some time experienced the disappointment of not having accomplished a thing you set out to do and that doesn't feel good. Even worse, such a 'failure' may have the effect of making you hesitant of attempting something again in the future, and if you suffer too many of these you just may quit trying altogether.
To avoid such a fate, give yourself the very best chance of succeeding in whatever you set out to do by including the following 6 components in whatever 'success formula' you are presently using.
1. Know Exactly What You Want:
This sounds ridiculously obvious but it truly is the beginning of all accomplishment.
Sadly however, few people give serious thought to what they actually want in each life area ... they simply don't take the personal time to do it. Consequently they never become motivated enough to create change and so plod along month after month, year after year, living with what they don't want.
Don't let that be you. Identify and become as clear as possible on what you want. And if that's challenging for you initially don't be discouraged, begin by identifying what you don't want.
Take a life area that you're feeling dissatisfied in and make it your business to become aware of why that is. But first ask yourself; is there anything you do like about your situation? If yes, write it down.
Okay, now what don't you like about it? Good, write that down too.
Next, ask yourself how you would rather that things were, and again write out your answers.
By the time you finish this little exercise you'll have a pretty good idea of what you want.
2. Know Why You Want It:
This also may seem obvious but it's something that even fewer people give thought to. Once you're as clear as possible on what you think you want, simply ask yourself the following questions and write out the answers:
· Why do I want this?
· What will it mean to me?
· How will it make me feel?
Do not answer the second question until you've answered the first, nor the third before the second. Each question, and your resulting answers, will take you progressively deeper into yourself and into understanding why it really is that you want this thing.
This little exercise is deceptively powerful but in order for it to be of value self-honesty is an absolute must. Don't patronize yourself with superficial answers. Go deep, especially with the third question.
3. Develop Strong Desire:
This is a biggie and without it there's little real chance for success. The stronger your desire the more likely it will be that you'll succeed, the weaker your desire the greater the chance you won't. So you'd better have desire and plenty of it.
It doesn't much matter where your desire originates. It may be driven by an intense dissatisfaction with a current situation or it may be a deep longing for something you've always wanted to experience. What does matter is that your desire level is high.
You can, by the way, deliberately ratchet your desire level upwards pretty much at will. I'll make that a topic for a future issue of 'To Your Success' ... but one tip I'll share with you now is this, 'make it an important part of your life'.
In other words, for brief periods throughout the day think about what you want, daydream about already having it. Bring things into your daily 'environment of influence' that can help you stay focused and motivated.
I'll give you an example. A number of years ago I decided that I would like to take up the guitar again after not having played for many years. Back when I played previously I was basically self-taught and had accumulated a lot of bad habits. I decided that this was a great opportunity to take some lessons, leave those old habits behind, and develop better technique. Unfortunately this would mean many hours of disciplined practice, which didn't thrill me all that much.
I knew that in order to stay motivated enough to accomplish this I would have to have a reasonably high level of desire or else all kinds of other life stuff would get in the way of my lessons and practice. So here's what I did.
For a few minutes each morning I visualized myself successfully playing at my desired level. I focused on the end results that I wanted to experience and how that would feel.
I made a financial commitment by signing up for classical guitar lessons. I made a personal time commitment to practice fundamentals each day. I bought classical guitar CDs and played them regularly. I looked for opportunities to watch and listen to skilled guitarists.
In short, I made learning to play the guitar a priority in my life and surrounded myself with anything and everything that would help it stay front and centre in my mind.
It worked. I stayed relatively true to that 'program' and within 2 or 3 years I was playing at or about the level that I had set out as my objective. Since then I've greatly enjoyed and appreciated playing.
But here's an interesting aside. I've stayed more or less at that level ever since. For the most part, I stopped learning and growing in regards to playing guitar.
Why? Because once I'd achieved my initial objective I became reasonably satisfied and let my playing just settle into being a regular part of my life. There was no more focus on serious improvement. I allowed my desire level to fall off and other things took its place.
Now this isn't necessarily a bad thing as I've quite enjoyed where I'm at. However, in the meantime a couple of other people in my life have stayed much more focused on learning and growing and are now playing at a level that reflects that. Playing with them is inspiring and shows me what's possible, while at the same time causing me to feel less satisfied with my present ability.
Oh sure, they may well have greater aptitude for playing than I but it still gets me thinking and fantasizing about experiencing more, so now if I want to actually achieve a new level of ability I know what I have to do. I need to reactivate this process that I already know to be effective.
4. Take Action:
I'm sure it's no surprise to you that without action not much will happen, that's pretty basic, and the sooner you take action the better. One of the most common causes of lack of achievement is not enough action.
So take action and take it quickly. You don't have to have all your ducks in a row; it's okay to learn as you go along. In most cases you're far better served by taking action and getting out of the gate quickly than by sitting back until you've arranged all the details.
Taking action immediately, consistent action, involves you in the process and causes learning.
5. Make a Commitment:
How important is making a commitment? Very!
Making a strong and firm commitment tells your subconscious, the Universe, and everyone around you that you're serious. When you're truly committed people will know. They'll see it and feel it. And when you're committed it's far less likely that setbacks will throw you off track. They may slow you down at times but they won't stop you.
It's fascinating to me how when you know what you want, why you want it, have strong desire, and are taking consistent action backed by real commitment, good things tend to happen in ways that defy logic. People, things and circumstances appear out of nowhere just when they're needed.
So make a commitment, write it down, date it, sign it, and put it someplace where you'll see it from time to time.
When I was going through that guitar learning experience my personal commitment to myself was to attend my weekly lessons and, for a minimum of 30 minutes each day, religiously practice only the exercises and scales set out by my instructor. This was a particularly difficult commitment to keep once I became skilled enough to play songs that I would rather have been playing, but I stuck with it until my instructor gave me permission to branch out.
I had to … I made a commitment to myself.
6. Keep the Faith:
This is sometimes a real tough one. So often people become discouraged and take their attention off of their objective when the going becomes difficult or they suffer a setback. They become discouraged and allow their thoughts to dwell on their current reality and everything wrong with it. BIG mistake, and here's why.
We live in a world in which everything is made of energy and in a constant state of vibration … EVERYTHING, including us.
Our thoughts are also energy, and they determine the frequency of our vibration. They also determine our emotions and feelings, which in turn affect the power of our thoughts (the stronger the emotions or feelings, the stronger the magnetic pull). This is particularly important to understand because magnetic attraction is very much at work in this world of energy.
There are a series of natural laws that clearly explain how this all works (check out our upcoming ThoughtShop program for more on this) but in a nutshell it goes something like this ...
· Our thoughts determine our vibrational frequency and magnetic pulling power.
· Our vibrational frequency determines what we attract into our life experience (basically, whatever is of a similar vibrational frequency).
· Our magnetic pulling power determines how fast we attract it (the more feeling or emotion attached to the thought, the stronger the pull and the quicker it comes).
In other words, as we think we vibrate and feel. As we vibrate and feel we attract. You can see evidence of this all around you in your own life and the lives of others.
It's also vitally important to understand that in this physical world we live in there is also time, sometimes referred to as a 'buffer', that temporarily separates our thoughts from our outcomes. This buffer causes a lag between 'the thought' and the 'outcome' (when what we're thinking about and in vibrational harmony with comes into our life experience).
Good thing too, I would say. Can you imagine if every time you thought something you would instantly have whatever was in vibrational harmony with it come popping into your life experience? Pretty scary!
But no, instead, for most of us it takes many thoughts (that ultimately inspire words and actions) over a period of time to play their part in the creating of our life experience. So if we're paying a reasonable amount of attention we can use this buffer of time as an ally ... we can literally change any thoughts not in alignment with what we want before they cause any damage.
The challenge however is that when we set a goal or objective for ourselves and start doing all the right stuff, (like focusing on what we want, visualizing, taking consistent action, etc) we don't necessarily see all the results we want right away. They take 'time'. It's a process.
Meanwhile, some of that other, unwanted stuff that's already well on its way (because of our previous thoughts, words and actions) still occasionally shows up. Residue from the past.
So there you are. For a while now you've been mostly doing good things to create this positive change and bring about the results you want. You're feeling pretty positive and making progress and then all of a sudden, WHAM … you get broadsided. You have another setback.
This is danger time. This is when it's easy to become discouraged and stop doing some or all of those good things you've been doing ... to turn your attention again to the 'wrong' things and stop taking the 'right' action. And if you fall into this trap you're in trouble.
Now is when you need faith. Faith in the process that you've been following. Faith in yourself; your abilities, your resolve, your commitment. Faith in God, the Universe, Nature, or whatever you believe that higher power to be because that's where these rules for the game of life came from in the first place. Faith that you're doing the right things and that with time the results you're looking for will be there.
Yes, it's good to take stock and review what you're doing at a time like this to ensure that you haven't unknowingly fallen into any bad habits and to make adjustments as necessary, but this is NOT the time to give up. You'll never know how close you were to personal victory if you quit now.
So give yourself every chance to succeed . Employ these simple success formula components and enjoy more of what life has to offer. You deserve it.
To your success,
