BEFRIENDING THE LAW OF ATTRACTION
After years of anonymity it's finally getting a LOT of attention, the Law of Attraction that is.
Why? Mostly because of a relatively new movie by Rhonda Byrne called The Secret. It was released in 2006 but really made it into the big time after being featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show early this year. KABOOM … it took right off! . If you haven't seen it I recommend you do.
Interestingly, the Law of Attraction has been with us forever … it's just that relatively speaking very, very few people knew much, if anything, about it. Did you?
The odds are that unless you were a reader of authors such as Ralph Waldo Trine, Wallace D. Waddles, James Allen, Napoleon Hill, Dr. Forest C. Shaklee, Earl Nightingale, Bob Proctor, Brian Tracy or Wayne Dyer (among others) … or you'd been a graduate of a course such as my ThoughtShop program in more recent years, you may not have been.
But now, well, the cat's out of the bag … and that's a very good thing.
You see, the Law of Attraction is possibly the most important of all natural laws to become familiar with. It ranks right up there with the Law of Gravity, and that's a pretty important one to know about.
I mean, think about it. If you had absolutely no knowledge of the Law of Gravity and you went about your daily business, life could get interesting in a real hurry. You might find yourself carrying something across a room, like a drinking glass full of liquid, a crystal vase, or your mother-in-law's favorite porcelain figurine, and just let go of it any old place because you didn't feel like holding it any more. And if that 'any old place' happened to be over a hard surface floor, well, you can imagine.
Or maybe you'd find yourself on the third floor balcony of a friend's apartment and decide to check out what was on the other side of the railing. Ouch!
Fortunately however we learned very early on in life, from our parents and our own experiences, about this physical law before we did ourselves too much harm. Oh sure, we may have taken a few tumbles from time to time but basically we learned to respect it and avoid the big problems. We still may not know exactly how the Law of Gravity works but we do know that it does, so for the most part we live in harmony with it.
But the Law of Attraction, now that's a different story altogether. Very few parents taught their children anything about it because THEY didn't know about it, nor did most teachers, church leaders or university professors. Yet despite our lack of awareness, it's been powerfully impacting each of our lives on a daily basis.
So what is this Law of Attraction and what does it do? Well basically, it's a timeless universal principle that determines and explains how it is that we get what we get in life … in every area.
To help us understand, let's go back to the Law of Gravity for a moment. This is a 'physical' law that explains that when we're within our earth's atmosphere, EVERYTHING that is heavier than air is attracted to the ground. Everything above the ground is naturally drawn to the ground and will end up there unless it is adequately supported by something, such as air currents, a body of water, or a structure of some kind. We even see this law at work in our own bodies as we age and our anti-sag support network loses its ability to anti-sag ... darn!
Now for the Law of Attraction. This is a 'non-physical' or 'energy' law that explains that whatever we think of on an ongoing basis is attracted to us. The essence (spirit, fundamental nature) of whatever we habitually think of will inevitably become part of our life experience.
Science, particularly the study of Quantum Physics, is helping to explain how this works. It's telling us that everything in our world is actually energy in motion. Everything, no matter how solid appearing, is energy that is in a constant state of vibration (you can look at any piece of solid matter through a super high-powered microscope to verify this). I won't go into details on this here but if you're interested in learning more of the technical stuff just talk to a science buff or check out some books at your local public library.
Now here's the kicker. Just as everything in our world is energy in a state of vibration with its own vibrational pattern, so are our thoughts … and they attract to us whatever is of a consistent vibrational nature. In effect, we are each a living magnet always attracting to us thoughts, people and situations consistent with our dominant thoughts and their vibrational pattern.
In other words, if our dominant or most commonly held thoughts about any subject are of a negative nature, we will attract into our life experience other thoughts, people and situations that are in vibrational harmony with those thoughts. If our typical thoughts about any subject are of a positive nature however, then whatever is in vibrational harmony with that is what we will attract.
Wild, isn't it?
What's really interesting about this though is that virtually every major religious text, as well as the writings of many of the great philosophers throughout our history, has spoken of this phenomenon in some way or another. This is likely where many of our old sayings have come from, such as "like attracts like", "birds of a feather flock together", and "the better it gets, the better it gets - the worse it gets, the worse it gets".
So what exactly does this mean in the real world we live in?
It means that just as an artist projects a picture of what's in her mind onto a blank canvas through a brush controlled by her hand, we create our life experience through our thoughts controlled by our mind. We are literally painting our life experience with our thoughts and because no one controls our thoughts but us, we are responsible for the life we create. Ouch and double ouch!!
But now for the good news. If we're not particularly overjoyed with what we've 'painted' in a certain area of our life so far, we can choose at any time to create something different. Just as that artist is not confined by what she has previously put on the canvas, because it can literally be painted over, neither are we.
Oh sure, we may need to live with the consequences of past thoughts and choices for a while, but starting today we can begin holding different thoughts … thoughts more consistent with what we actually want in life. This then leads to us attracting other thoughts, people and situations (as well as making choices), consistent with our desired outcomes, thus paving the way for a tomorrow that holds a more desirable life experience.
Are you still with me? Good, because we're almost done for today.
Before we wrap up with our final 'thought' though it's very important to understand that this law has at least one other thing in common with the Law of Gravity.
Gravity doesn't judge whether it's good or bad that something falls to the ground, it just causes it to fall because that's what it does. So it is with the Law of Attraction. It also doesn't care about good or bad, wanted or not wanted, it just does what it does. It attracts to us the essence of whatever we predominantly think about.
The reason this is so important to understand is that every subject regarding our life experience has two sides … wanted and not wanted, and whichever we focus our attention on is what we will inevitably attract.
For example … if the subject is our job, and our habitual thoughts surrounding it are about everything that's wrong with our working conditions, boss, co-workers and income, we will continue attracting more of the same into our life experience ... all the 'wrong' things relative to what we want will keep appearing.
If on the other hand our thoughts regarding our job focus on gratitude for being employed, and looking for and noticing the good things about our working conditions, boss, co-workers and income, as well as looking for solutions to those less desirable aspects of it, we will begin attracting more of those good things into our life experience … more of the 'right' things relevant to what we want will appear.
Sometimes this will take the form of an improvement in conditions and other people's behaviors in our current job, and sometimes it will take the form of a new and better job opportunity. Make sense?
This same principle by the way applies to all subjects, including but not limited to money, relationships, and health. Each of these subjects has two aspects, the wanted and unwanted ... an abundance of money / lack of money … a relationship based on respect and consideration / lack of respect and consideration … vibrant health / illness. The question is; which of these aspects will we focus our attention on?
Stay tuned for next month's issue in which we'll discuss some practical ways for keeping our thoughts and attention firmly on the 'wanted' and off of the 'not wanted'.
In the meantime, if you're one of those who is serious about taking your life or career to new and even more exciting levels through learning to engage in practical ways the Law of Attraction and other important 'mental' laws, I recommend you consider responding to our upcoming ThoughtShop program announcement below.
