Issue # 25 | To Your Success | February 2006 |
"He who cherishes a beautiful vision, a lofty ideal in his heart, will one day realize it. Dream lofty dreams and as you dream so shall you become." ----- James Allen WHERE ARE YOU GOING? Have you noticed that at this time of year quite a few people are still focused on accomplishing objectives they set for themselves at the beginning of January? I say 'still' because in the coming weeks and months many will give up on them. Yes I know it's sad, but it's true. Why does this happen? Too often it's because they just don't know about a few basic steps that would dramatically increase their ability to succeed. But YOU already took the first of those steps early last month when you completed those little exercises in the January issue of 'To Your Success' (if you're a new subscriber or accidentally misplaced it you can find Issue 24 in the Newsletters section of our website). Now, at that time you may not have recognized how relevant that was to this topic, but you soon will. Because of what you did last month you now have a reasonably good understanding of your moral and life-quality values. In other words, if someone asked you what your values were you could confidently tell them. You also have identified the traits and characteristics that make up who you presently are as a person. You've determined which of those you are going to eliminate or weaken and which you choose to add or strengthen in order to become the person you ultimately aspire to be. You've also begun to think and behave as if you already were that person. This is all good stuff because it sets the stage for the next step, which is to consciously create a picture, or 'vision', of what your life will look like when it's finally just the way you want it to be. You know, when you actually have whatever is meaningful to you, when you are living where you really want to live, when your relationships are wonderfully the way you would like them to be, when you are doing what you really want to do, and when deep inside you're the person you ideally want to be. Sound good? You'll soon see how creating your vision is the next step to dramatically improving your ability to be, do and have everything that's truly important to you. Where to begin? You begin by doing something you may not have done for a long time … you daydream. You exercise your imagination. You let yourself think about how you would really like your life to be if you knew you could just snap your fingers and wake up tomorrow morning in that life. Now, before you get too carried away it's important to add that this is not fantasy we're talking about here, it's real life. In other words, if you COULD snap your fingers and instantly have that life it would mean that you'd actually have to LIVE it … so be careful what you ask for. This is why it's so important to first identify the values that you want to live your life by and discover who you ultimately aspire to be as a person. The ideal life you're about to create for yourself must be consistent with both of these because if it isn't, you won't be happy in that life for very long. For example, you may fantasize about living on a secluded tropical island but if your values include having close relationships with your children, grandchildren and long time friends, and if the person you aspire to be includes sharing your knowledge and experience by mentoring young people in your local community, there could be a conflict. Your vision on the other hand would merge these two. In your vision you may live close enough to your family, friends and community to satisfy your values and personal aspirations, while at the same time enjoying periodic extended visits to a tropical paradise. Make sense? So here we go. Your exercise for this month is to spend some pleasurable moments imagining your life being just the way you'd like it to be. Allow yourself to think outside of your 'present life' box. Dream a little. Create a vision for your ideal future life. This exercise brings your 'fantasies' into alignment with the practicalities of your 'values and who you aspire to be', resulting in the creation of a realistic, achievable life vision that you can begin moving toward today. Begin by writing down this vision of your ideal future life. No really, don't just think about it, write it out. Write it out in present tense form as though you're already living it. Use descriptive words and involve all 5 physical senses … see it, smell it, hear it, taste it, feel it. Read your written version at least once a day. Make a movie of it in your head and watch it as often as you can … BE in the movie. What you're creating here is an exciting and practical tool that will provide you with strength and motivation in the days and months ahead. It will positively engage several of the mental laws, including the powerful Law of Attraction that you may already know about. Don't underestimate this tool … it's one that is used by high achievers in virtually all areas of life. "Whatever you vividly imagine, ardently desire, sincerely believe and enthusiastically act upon, must inevitably come to pass." ----- Paul J. Meyer By completing these exercises from issues 24 & 25 of 'To Your Success', you will KNOW where you're going ... and you will have come a long way toward ensuring that the goals you set for yourself from now on will be achieved. Next month you'll see why these first steps are so important and learn how to set 'smart' goals that are right for you.
