Have You Done It Yet?

Have you ever had an urge or desire to do something significant? Maybe it was to learn to play a musical instrument, participate in a sporting event, further your education or write a book. The specifics aren't as important as, did you do it?

You didn't? Ouch! "How dare you target this article to me", you may be saying.

The truth is if the shoe fits, you're not alone in wearing it. Most of us would have to plead guilty to the same offence.

But why? If we really would like to do something, why don't we?

Let's step back for a moment to look at this objectively. Have you noticed that often when you have a desire to do something but don't take action right away, the desire begins to fade? And the longer you leave it, the weaker your desire becomes?

Oh sure, you still may intend to do it 'someday', you'd like to … but you just don't seem to be able to get started. It seems there's always a legitimate reason why you can't.

If you can relate, join the club. It's actually a very large club because this is quite a common disease. Possibly even more common than the cold or flue. So how do you cure yourself and resign from this club?

There's no better way than to simply take action. Do something! Take the first step, no matter how small it may be!

If you want to learn to play a musical instrument, sign up for some lessons. Not later, NOW!

If you want to participate in a sporting event, do something to get started, NOW!

If you want to write a book, start writing NOW! It doesn't matter if your first few paragraphs or chapters aren't that good, all that matters is that you begin. You can always edit or rewrite later.

Why is it so important to just get started? Great question!

If you've ever studied the Mental Laws of Nature, you're probably aware that;
A. What you think about determines how you feel.
B. How you feel determines what you do (or don't do).
C. What you do (or don't do) always determines your results.

So with that understanding, it only makes sense to keep thoughts of what you really would like to do constantly in your mind because they will create feelings of 'wanting' to do the activity. An excellent strategy!

But if you haven't mastered that yet, there's another very helpful Mental Law (sometimes called the Law of Reversibility) that can be applied to this situation. It states that, "Whenever you take action, even though you may not exactly feel like doing so, the very act of 'doing' creates the feeling of 'wanting to do'."

Have you experienced that? Have you ever been lazing around at home on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, maybe watching TV even though you knew you should be doing something else like playing outside with your kids, going for a walk or getting some other form of exercise? You knew you should be doing that but you weren't motivated enough to take action? You just couldn't get yourself up off the sofa?

But then someone came along and either physically dragged you up or otherwise harassed you into doing something active. And did you notice that even though you initially didn't want to, once you were doing it you actually began to feel like doing it?

Therein lies the secret. Doing the action creates the feeling of wanting to do the action, which encourages you to do more of the same.

An interesting aspect of this wonderful physical life of ours is that it has one major restriction, time. It's the one thing that can never be replaced. So doesn't it make sense to not squander it, but rather use it well?

In the very wise words of Ivan Turgenev, "If we wait for the moment when everything, absolutely everything is ready, we shall never begin."

What better time to begin than right now?
